Wightman Secures 1500m Silver as Josh Kerr Endures Injury

Athlete with medal

Jake Wightman earned his latest world-level medal and initial since winning the world title back in 2022.

Jake Wightman marked his return to a global medal stand with championship 1500-meter second place, but UK team-mate Josh Kerr's championship bid was ruined by a physical setback in a dramatic final in Japan.

Wightman, the 2022 champion, achieved a comeback on his return to the international scene, having battled with setbacks and missed the previous two major championships.

The athlete collapsed with exhaustion after reaching the line before gazing up at the big screen, which showed that Portuguese runner Isaac Nader had beaten him to first place by two-hundredths of a second in a nail-biting finish.

It was disappointment for Josh Kerr, who was seeking to become only the fourth athlete to defend the 1500-meter championship, but was denied the opportunity after pulling up midway through the event and managing to hobble over the finish.

The defending champion, who had positioned himself at the rear of the race, halted in pain on the penultimate circuit but pushed himself to hobble around to the finish last.

Meanwhile, the Briton made his bid for the top prize. Although he came up painfully just short, it is a silver medal which will seem as rewarding as first after the challenges of the past few seasons.

Team GB had to wait until the fifth day of the championships in Japan to celebrate a podium finish, but Wightman's's stunning second place lifted them to 17th in the medal table on the day.
