Typhoon Matmo Struck Coastal China Causing Massive Relocations

Typhoon Matmo struck the coast on the coastal regions of China on the weekend, shortly after passage over the provincial island of Hainan. The intense weather led to the relocation of around 350,000 residents, bringing torrential rain and destructive gusts, especially between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were halted and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport.

Storm Details

Matmo, the 21st cyclone of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 94mph and dumped over 50mm of precipitation in a short period in Chongzou and Qinzhou. Urban areas of Nanning also experienced significant rain amounts.

Matmo triggered China's highest-level red alert, with disruptions in Zhanjiang, where commercial activities, transport links and highways were closed. In the special administrative region, numerous air services were impacted and 30 cancelled.

Forecast and Movement

As Matmo advances inward towards Cao Bang province in the neighboring country, it is projected to diminish into a less intense system with 55mph winds but will continue to bring substantial precipitation. Northern Vietnam could experience significant rainfall on Monday, increasing the risk of flooding and mudslides. The system is anticipated to move towards Yunnan province in China, where further heavy rainfall is probable.

Global Weather Events

At the same time, Hurricane Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on Saturday night, first as a storm system. It led to a weather alert for the southwestern areas from a coastal point to another location on the start of the week.

In the early hours of Sunday, Priscilla was about 305 miles from Cabo Corrientes with sustained winds of 105km/h. It strengthened into a hurricane in the evening, when wind speeds reached at 75mph.

Though not expected to hit the coast, Priscilla is expected to produce dangerous waves and strong currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is predicted on Monday, reaching a considerable volume in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could receive 50-100mm.

In other parts, a cyclone named Shakhti has developed as the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm of the year in the a body of water, causing an warning from the India Meteorological Department for Maharashtra. On that day, Shakhti was 130 miles southeast of a location in Oman with peak wind speeds of 103km/h.

Shakhti, which has tracked in a southwestern direction and weakened, is predicted to recurve eastward into the Arabian Sea. Turbulent waters are likely to continue along the coastal stretch and intense rain is anticipated in coastal districts including specific Indian cities.
