Three police officers perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was found shortly later. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander informed reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
