Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

Mr Comey's legal representative filed the plea acting as his counsel in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would attempt to have the proceedings terminated for multiple reasons including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Trump pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they planned to file several legal requests to terminate the case before a legal hearing, arguing the prosecution was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to take over the proceedings.

James Comey's case was initially overseen by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into a different rival - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and child his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.

After listening to the magistrate state his rights and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, he was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he declared just days before the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors assert James Comey provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the Senate by claiming he had not permitted a person at the agency to release to media organizations information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Personal Comments

In a video Mr Comey posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and accused Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have understood for years that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump shared on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, prosecute the former director and other people.
